Thinking Outside the Panel - The Graphic Novel
Have a story to tell? In this mostly self-directed course, students will bring in their own works in progress and we’ll talk about different approaches to this incredibly versatile format. From script to thumbnail sketches to finished pages, we’ll discuss the overall process of transcribing tales from our imaginations. Each class will begin with a brief lecture on various subjects including story structure, time and pacing, page and panel composition, camera angles, and text. We’ll look at masters of the medium such as Scott McCloud, David Mazzucchelli, Bill Watterson, Jon J Muth and Will Eisner for guidance and inspiration. Most of the class time will be spent working on our individual pieces, as David offers assistance to those who request it. Dive into this fantastic storytelling realm of the arts!
Materials
You may bring in any medium you choose and any surface to work on! A medium-to-large sketchbook is a good place to start, pencils, whatever. It's entirely up to you! Bring any reference material you may need. Come prepared!
