5 Weeks, Thursdays January 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th, and February 6th, 6:00pm - 8:30pm
Instructor is David Caesar
This intensive drawing course will emphasize creating intriguing compositions as well as careful rendering of subject matter. Reference will include one or more photographs (of the student’s choosing) and will be incorporated into thumbnail sketches to attain a unique composition. Attention to light and shadow and the description of form will be prioritized. The instructor will discuss these basic practices and we will spend the majority of each session working on our individual pieces. While our emphasis will be on the use of graphite, students are welcome to bring any wet or dry medium to create with. This class is one of discipline and concentration, so bring your game face!
SUGGESTED MATERIALS:
A sketchbook, preferably with smooth, heavy-weight paper - the Robert Bateman sketchbooks are excellent. A 0.5 mechanical pencil with 2H lead. A Factis eraser pen, and/or a Tombow Mono Zero eraser pen. A kneadable eraser. In later classes, and after your preliminary drawing is finished, a sheet of Stonehenge paper cut to any size is an excellent drawing surface (you will be tracing your preliminary drawing onto this paper on your own time). Even better is Arches 140lb Hot Press.
Photographs you choose to work from should be printed out - black-and-white is fine. Be sure that the photos are in focus and exhibit some interesting light and shadow. Avoid those that were taken with a flash.
