5 Weeks, Wednesdays, May 28th, June 4th, 11th, 18th & 25th, 2:30 – 5:00pm
Instructor is David Caesar
In this course we will focus on the creation of two pieces: one portrait, and one animal. Each will present its own challenges, namely blending and creating texture.
Students will have the chance to practice a number of applications such as wet-on-wet, glazing, and drybrush. The drawings will be transferred onto a prepared surface using graphite transfer paper. Photo reference will be kept close at hand while we work our way through the process.
The instructor will demonstrate each stage before students copy the technique. The animal painting will include a simple background which will be done first, and give us a chance to explore atmospheric effects. We will spend two classes on each project exclusively; students will focus on one of them (their choice) during the fifth class.
Students are also welcome to bring in their own projects to work on instead of the prescribed assignments, no matter what stage of development the piece is in.
MATERIALS
- Strathmore 9 x 12” Canvas Paper Pad or pre-gessoed/sanded hardboard/masonite. I recommend staying away from any other canvas paper or stretched canvas.
- Acrylic paint should not be of the dollar-store variety. I recommend Amsterdam, Pebeo’s Origin line, Golden, Holbein, or Liquitex. Please stay away from Galeria. Colours: Titanium white, Ivory Black or Mars Black, Pthalo Blue, Primary Yellow, Cadmium Red Hue or Napthol Red or Pyrrole Red.
- Brushes should be synthetic, not animal hair. Premier brushes are very affordable and are of a good quality. Short handle is fine. The following are only suggestions and you don’t need to adhere to the list too strictly: 1 - 2” flat, #4 filbert (“cat tongue), Rounds: #6, 4, 1, 5/0
- Palette: a paper palette pad is highly recommended; do not bring plastic palettes with no lid. Stay-wet-palettes are acceptable.
- Additional: a spray bottle is a great idea.
