Gamblin Cold Wax Medium is a simple mixture of pure beeswax, Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits, and a small amount of alkyd resin. This versatile medium can be added directly to oil colors as a painting medium, used to modify the surface quality of Gamblin Galkyd painting mediums, as well as used alone as a matte varnish.

Methods
Painting Medium
As a painting medium, Cold Wax Medium can be used to make oil colors thicker and more matte. A soft paste formulated to knife consistency, Gamblin Cold Wax can be thinned to brush consistency by dissolving in a small amount of OMS. The surface of paintings made with beeswax mediums will become only as hard as a beeswax candle. Please note, painters who are using more than 1/3 cold wax medium to 2/3 oil paints should paint on rigid supports or paintings may crack when moved. By mixing 1/2 Cold Wax Medium and 1/2 G-Gel, painters can paint on flexible supports.
Matting Agent
Cold Wax Medium can be used to lower the gloss level of our Galkyd painting mediums. For fluid mediums, we recommend first dissolving the Cold Wax Medium in our Gamsol OMS. This mixture creates a fluid matting agent which can be added to the fluid medium. The Cold Wax Medium can be added directly to our gel mediums. Wax Varnish
Straight Cold Wax Medium can be applied to a dry painting as a removable, matte varnish. Once applied, the Cold Wax can be left to dry for a matte finish or gently buffed for a soft luster. Cold Wax Medium can also be used to reduce the gloss level of our Gamvar Picture Varnish. For information on applying our Cold Wax as a varnish, please refer to the video demonstration at:
