This piece, We Are Anishinaabe aims to express and depict the diversity of race, gender, and identity that can be found in Indigenous communities. This painting is a celebration of true Anishinaabe folks from all backgrounds and experiences; the message---"you belong".
Feature Artist: Jessie Buchanan
Jessie Buchanan is an Indigenous visual artist living and working in Guelph, Ontario. Her studio painting practice places emphasis on the process of painting as personal healing both in the painting process itself and in the articulation of the artist's lived experience. Jessie is seeking to express herself as an Anishinaabe Kwe (an Indigenous woman) who also inherited Euro-Canadian ancestry. Jessie has lived off reserve in urban, predominantly non-Indigenous communities throughout her life. Using paint on canvas, she weaves visual narratives that incorporate symbolism from these streams. Although the subject matter varies, common themes emerge, including modernity, Indigenous identity, tradition, teachings, connection to the land and intersectionality.
