Lorna ColeStore note: Lorna's work has been displayed in our 1st floor storefront and window display, in addition to her pieces in our 3rd floor gallery! Artist Statement: My latest series of acrylic abstracts start with a gesso grounds followed by expressive writing on the canvas, or closing my eyes while I express my ideas/feelings with line work. These approaches remove the blank-canvas syndrome and start me on a voyage of self awareness and discovery. As well, I often pour paints on the canvas, let it dry and then proceed to use bright colours which feed my soul. Before I know it, the painting is more than half finished. I often work on three paintings at a time. I love to work with paints, pens and other mark-making tools from various suppliers to find what works best for me. It gives me the opportunity to keep the art fresh and inspired. I always feel most alive in my studio. My work is from my soul to yours. Biography: Art found me over 22 years ago. Debilitating arthritis forced me to undergo five surgeries on my fingers for joint replacements/fusions years ago. Fortunately, painting gives me pure joy and exuberance— flowing out of my heart onto my canvas— temporarily reducing my chronic pain. Elizabeth GrinElizabeth Grin works with mixed-media, exploring collage, photography, painting, and whatever suits her purpose, to create abstract and surreal works of art. She is inspired by noticing the world around her—odd juxtapositions, slivers of light, unique facets of our natural and urban landscapes, and glimpses into the divine. Intuition, observations, and philosophical musings are often part of her art, somewhere. She continuously explores techniques and materials and is intrigued by methods to transform recyclable items into materials and resources for artwork. Katherine PercivalArtist Statement: Katherine Percival creates abstract and representational mixed media paintings, drawings, and prints that explore the human reality through feelings and emotions. Taking what she feels on the inside and sharing it to the outside world. She explores this concept through a variety of materials that reflect a particular emotion, tackling the notion of what you see is not what you get. As conscious beings we all feel emotions but at different capacities, intensities, and effects. Katherine is interested in diving into the depths of those emotions and outwardly sharing them in hopes to connect people through what can often be an isolating experience. Biography: Katherine Percival is an emerging artist and educator based in Guelph, ON. Katherine attended Brock University where she obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) and Bachelor of Education. From her experience as a teacher and understanding the prevalence of mental health growing since the pandemic, Katherine’s artwork explores and reveals the experiences attributed to mental health that is often seen from within but never understood from the outside. Using her own experiences, she hopes to create a bridge between what people see and what people feel, allowing that gap of understanding to turn into empathy and consideration. Katherine is a recently elected member of the Colour and Form Society and has been shown at the Boarding House Gallery, Necessary Arts Gallery, Etobicoke Civic Centre Art Gallery, and the Woodstock Art Gallery.

Jane BaranThe diversity of Jane’s work reflects her joyous approach to creating art with a variety of mediums. Imagination is an integral part of her life; it’s what motivates the fascination she has with capturing a memory or emotion and giving it a tangible existence through her art. Observing leaves caught in a whirlpool, it becomes the inspiration for the glazing of a ceramic bowl. The death of an armadillo, run over in traffic compels her to tell its’ sad story using collagraphic printmaking. Her interests become the subjects portrayed in her art – mushrooms, gladiolas, trailer parks and weaving – all are grist for her creativity. Jane has worked in textiles, ceramics, printmaking, pen and ink, oils, watercolours, sculpture, acrylics, and mixed media. She has spent the last five years at the University of Guelph obtaining her bachelor’s degree in Studio Arts. Jane’s work currently reflects two diverse areas of interest. One, the conflicts caused by human industrialization, specifically the consequences of human encroachment into environmentally natural spaces and ecosystems. And secondly, the historical involvement of women in the manufacture of textiles, in particular weaving, and it how reflects their contributions to human civilization over time. Elizabeth Grin appears to have an eye for catching things in her own view. Her portraits displayed were of a varied concept. My own personal view is that in the future the art world will hear much more of this artist.
