This class is a continuation of our popular GSA Intermediate Watercolour Class. Students will be building upon techniques learned in the previous class and taking a deeper dive into the process.
In this course there will be reviewed the essential techniques applied at the beginner’s level and new approaches will be explored to give the participants understanding how capable and unique medium watercolor is. Besides an intense exercising the most unpredictable wet into wet transparent painting method, the technique of an opaque painting will be introduced.
Other techniques as glazing, scumbling, dry brush, and combination of watercolor with ink and quash will be also demonstrated. The students will be encouraged to draw and paint multiple examples of chosen for the class motif and then they start experiment with various subject matters of more complex content, applying to the work various technical approaches.
Demonstrations will include objects, landscapes/ cityscapes, interiors, human and or animal figure. The participants may try all demonstrated subject matters but if they prefer to stick to one or two of them, they still will be individually instructed to help develop their skill level and increase confidence in the medium. The Instructor will pass virtually a weekly structure including the photo images and feedback on new techniques. Sketchbook work will reinforce techniques and ideas introduced in class.
Materials:
- Papers: Watercolor Canson pad of 9x12” sheets, 140 lb cold press
- Canson mixed media 5.5 x 8.5 sketchbook –recommended (optional)
- Brushes (Synthetic or of natural hair): 0.5" or 1” flat, #1 round, #2 liner or rigger, # 6 round, #10 round
- Paint: A watercolour set of pans or tubes, at least lemon yellow, cadmium yellow, cadmium red, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, phthalo blue, burnt umber and Payne’s grey
- palette with divisions or just a mixing tray
- pencil and eraser
- 3 watercolor pencils - primary colors
- water spray bottle
- optional: 30 ml of acrylic ink, any color and or small students’ set of gouache paints
