Barbara Shaw

Artist Statement:

My interest in making art began very early under the guidance of my talented parents. I attended classes at a studio on Park Avenue in Montreal, Quebec, after graduating from high school. There I studied fashion design and illustration, advertising design and mechanical drawing. My first employment was with Bell Telephone Company where I interpreted engineering drawings onto large linen "plats" for road crews.

While living in Manitoba I painted in "the new medium" acrylics in an open studio on large panels. My interest in aboriginal art became a journey in colour and design. After settling in Ontario I began giving private lessons to high school students. Watercolour allowed me to work "en plein air".

My first successful solo show took place. I was employed to create 70 watercolour designs for Raspberry Rain Images/ Fox Run Co. Canada. I am now a full time artist with my own studio. I belong to several art associations and continue to teach art skills. My mediums are watercolour, acrylic and repurposed textile

Biography:

I began to create when I was a child. My parents were both talented and creative. They encouraged me to draw with chalk and crayons slowly introducing watercolor and oil paint. My grandmother taught me to embroider and to design my clothes (mostly pajamas!).

After graduating from high school, I found myself drawing engineering plans for Bell Telephone in Montreal. In the evenings I attended classes in fashion design and illustration.

After a busy time raising my children and working at various jobs, I became free to carry on with art. I travelled extensively. Northern locations, Iceland, Sweden, Estonia, Britian, France, northern Quebec and Ontario, the Maritimes and Japan all became part of my growing appreciation for artistic pursuits.

Into my senior years I am often found at work in my studio. I have illustrated a book about the High Arctic and another, a gift of memories for a family. I have hand stitched wall quilts from beautiful, discarded fabrics.

My love of the north takes me to Temagami, Devil’s Island, in August every year to enjoy the landscape, painting, swimming, and hiking. I also enjoy the cottage "get together" with creative friends at Pickerel Lake in September. Back to the studio!

Colleen Telford

Artist Statement:

This collection of work is an experimental journey through colour and texture. These pieces range from muted, almost gloomy, landscapes to more vibrant pieces representing the movement indicative of our natural world. Through my use of flowing ink saturated backgrounds to the formation of trees, this work embraces the many ways I view the environment around and within me as both fluid and structured. This exhibit is inspired by my lifelong appreciation for nature and its ability to heal and protect.

Biography:

Colleen Telford, born and raised in Guelph, is a self taught artist who sees and understands what the natural world can teach us about the strength of being human. Through her life she has shown immense creativity and versatility by exploring different mediums from photography, professional floral design, and water colour to her current acrylic paintings.

Colleen has developed a technique of layering acrylic paint that portrays the balance between the stability of the trees in these natural scenes with the ever changing environment in which they live. She believes that trees are very much representative of hope, strength, and resilience. The environment which they grow is often more so the focus in these paintings and make us really sit with the story being told reflecting the peace, calm, chaos, messiness and violence we all experience in our lifetime.

We may be faced with circumstances, situations, and environments that can be challenging but we always have the choice to stay firmly planted and grow beyond pain and trauma. As someone who is a survivor of domestic violence, Colleen is a testament to the strength and resilience we can gain through chaos beyond our control. Through painting, she is able to process these events and heal from them. Much like the trees never ending growth, Colleen sees her artistic journey as an evolution and can't wait to see what inspirations and techniques she will find next.

Brenda LaRose

Artist Statement:

Armed with brushes, palette knives and acrylic paint, I express my love of the rugged, yet peaceful, scenes that so many people are drawn to for refuge from our busy world. I am a self-taught painter, with experience in painting a vast array of subject matter, but nothing comes close to the connection I have with the spirit of northern Ontario. As I glide across the lake in my kayak I marvel at the splendour of nature. At daybreak, I am moved beyond words by the grandeur and enduring optimism of the sunrise. During the day, the warmth of the sun envelopes me like a comforting embrace. And the evening provides a salute to all the glory of the day, as the light fades away softly. My process includes taking photos of the scenes I encounter, then selecting the ones that will allow me to express the connection I felt while kayaking. I use layers of acrylic paint applied with brushes and sometimes palette knives, creating texture and depth. Sometimes thick, sometimes thin, always purposeful. Most paintings incorporate the elements of water, rocks, trees, and the sky. If you have a connection to nature, and the north, I hope you enjoy my work as much as I have enjoyed creating it.

Biography:

Brenda LaRose is a contemporary representational landscape painter who lives in Halton Hills, Ontario and has been painting for over 30 years. While she has painted many types of subject matter over the years, she is currently focused on creating art inspired by the magnificence of the scenery around Whitestone Lake, in northern Ontario, where she photographs the stunning scenes she encounters as she travels around the lakes by car, by boat, by kayak and on foot. Her favourite subject matter are landscapes, especially scenes from the lake. In her travels she also captures smaller elements of lake life, including water lilies and loons. They are typically painted with acrylic paints on canvas using brushes and palette knives to create the exquisite texture that makes the paintings come alive. The feelings of peace and serenity that she senses when she is viewing the scenes often evokes that same feeling in the viewer and allows them the opportunity to bring that into their home and/or cottage to enjoy every day. Sharing that splendour with others is what motivates her and gives her joy. Over the years, Brenda has taught painting to hundreds of people from beginners to advanced level, in the painting studio and art store she co-owned with a friend. Her art has been sold locally and internationally.

Brenda has exhibited at a variety of galleries, shows and venues including:

- the Helson Gallery in Georgetown - the Alton Mill Arts Centre, Alton - Pazan Gallery in Oakville - Unitarian Church of Mississauga - Leslie Grove Art Gallery in Toronto - Fine Art Society of Milton - the on-line gallery as well as in-person at Holcim Gallery - Solo on-line show with the Arts on the Credit - the Honey Bee Festival in Honey Harbour - Muskoka Arts and Crafts Show - Dockside Art and Music Festival in Gravenhurst - Artisan Market in Dundas - the Arts on the Credit Shows in Oakville (Fall 2021, Spring & Fall 2022) She was selected for the “Under Wraps” public art project with the Town of Halton Hills in 2021. The digital image of her landscape painting was used as a wrap for an electrical box. She is now a member of the Town of Halton Hills Public Arts Advisory Board, where she helps to bring public art into the community
